“What's in a Name? (?)
“Oohh…Really? Are you Afilin? I’m sorry since first time I heard your name it seems like you’re a girl” said one of my new friends in junior high school. I just gave a smile to her. There are some other similar stories with the story above. Perhaps someone will say, “How busy you are, because you have to clarify & clarify again when you have new friends.” This is not really right actually. I think it is not really right because it will attract my new friends at first, so they can remember me easily because of my unusual name.
Based on my parents’ story my name was given by my father. For your information, all my brothers & sisters have “nur” as their first names. My parents have an agreement about that. Their reason is so simple, but I think it has a very deep purpose. They wish their children will become people who are able to give as much as possible the useful things to everyone. I very respect it.
Perhaps “nur” is not a strange word in Indonesia. In English perhaps we will refer “nur” as “something that related with the light” while in Indonesian it means “cahaya”. How about “afilin”? Actually “afilin” means “to sink, to move down, something that related with below or bottom part of something”. It is like in QS Al An’am: 76 that tell about the prophet Ibrahim a.s. Why did he choose that word? Actually I haven’t asked him about it, so I just have a positive assumption for knowing his purpose. My family is not a rich family. Many people will refer to the word like: “bottom or below”. Perhaps my father want me to become a person who give useful things to people who belong to “the bottom part in society”, they usually are the poor people.
I think this name is very appropriate for me based on my assumption toward my father’s purpose. Although it is still my assumption, if it is wrong I think he has another positive reason. It is impossible if our parents have a negative expectation to their children. Therefore, I don’t have a plan to change my name. My name is my parents’ expectation, so I have to keep it and I want to strive as strong as I can to achieve the purpose of my name. In other words, our name is our prayer. It is very important thing for us. Hence, I disagree with Shakespeare who said, “What’s in a name?” According to me our name is part of our motivation to do the best in our live. Keep that good name and let’s do our best to attain our names’ purpose! ^_^
